THE MEANING OF THE WORD "FRIEND"

“But Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested Him.”
---Matthew 26:50

Within scripture the word friend is only mentioned once, and it is quoted. This is the title Christ laid upon Judas when Judas betrayed Him. (Matthew 25:50) Modern translations of the bible have dumbed-down scripture, Within the English Standard Translation for example, the word friend is mentioned one-hundred seventeen times.
 
More closely translated, the word friend as it appears through scripture means “those familiar to you.” In today’s vernacular this can mean “Bud”, Pal”, Chum”, or “Bro”. It can also mean “dipshit, “asshole”, “idiot”, or “moron”.  While both groups may be benign, they represent a body of people who have not entered into a covenant with Christ personally.
 
Christ warned His Apostles and their disciples that: “You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and those familiar to you, and they will put some of you to death.” (Luke 21:16). Once you have entered into a covenant with Christ there is no going back. He breaks down the gates of Hell to cleanse you when you stumble and strikes down your enemies when they surround you. He alone is worthy of worship, for He created the universe and cleanses us of our sins.
 
Christ offers eternal life. Those familiar to us often offer temptations into sin. When rejected of the temptations they offer, these same people typically gnash their teeth and harbor resentments (Matthew 13). They focus their attention upon us and plot different approaches to offer the same temptations or more elaborate temptations. When rejected again, they often wish to do us harm. In effect, they idolize us.
